Prof. Wolfgang Köhler

Prof. Wolfgang Köhler was born in Hofgeismar and had classical piano lessons at the age of eight and violin lessons at the age of 15. After participating in the Burghausen jazz course in 1977 he developed an interest in modern jazz and founded the band Just Friends with the saxophonist Allan Praskin. During a stay in New York he had lessons with Barry Harris and Ellis Larkins. In late 1980 he moved to Berlin where he studied school music at the Berlin Uuniversity of the Arts and graduated in 1985. Alongside his studies he was taught by Walter Norris and from 1982-96 he had lessons with Etzel Gundlich. From 1982 Wolfgang Köhler was a member of the Lou Blackburn International Quartet, the Red Onions New Orleans jazz band and from 1982-86 he accompanied Karl Dall on his tours. Wolfgang Köhler has performed with Herb Geller, Lou Donaldson, Leo Wright, Lew Soloff, Silvia Droste, Bobby Shew, Billy Elgard, the RIAS Tanzorchester under Horst Jankowski and the RIAS Big Band under Jiggs Whigham. He performed with the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Deutsches Sinfonieorchester and recorded CDs with both orchestras. In 1992 Wolfgang Köhler was pianist on the SFB TV talk show Berlin Mitte and part-time organist on the VIVA talk show Ma Kuckn with Stefan Raab. Apart from his own ensembles he has composed soundtracks and worked in theatres including the Freie Volksbühne and the Maxim Gorki Theater. Wolfgang Köhler has taught since 1980. From 1992 to February 1999 he was tutor of jazz piano at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 1995 he has worked at the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" Berlin as tutor of jazz piano and accompanying. In 1995/96 he was piano instructor at workshops in Bologna and in 1996/97 he accompanied jazz singing workshops with Silvia Droste in Bielefeld. In the summer semester 1999 Wolfgang Köhler was appointed Professor of Piano in the Jazz and Popular Music department of the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" Berlin.
Pianist SooJin Anjou enjoys an astonishingly varied and extensive international career as soloist, chamber musician and partner in diverse interdisciplinary projects. Born in South Korea, she received her training in the United States, Hungary and Germany. She graduated from the Juilliard School in 2002 as the only person ever to win both of Juilliard’s undergraduate commencement prizes, for achievement in music and the liberal arts. While at Juilliard, she was a recipient of the Vladimir Horowitz Scholarship and, having won the school’s annual concerto competition, performed Mozarts Piano Concerto K.482 with the Juilliard Orchestra conducted by Otto-Werner Mueller. While still a student, she was prominently featured in Asahi-TV’s documentary “New York, New Yorkers”, which was televised in many parts of Asia and released on DVD. After private studies with Ferenc Rados in Budapest, she completed her Diplom and Konzertexamen at the Berlin University of the Arts as a pupil of Klaus Hellwig, with a minor in fortepiano.
Ms. Anjou is an avid performer of contemporary music, and composers have been entrusting their work to her since she was 15. As a member of the New Juilliard Ensemble, she premiered or performed works by, among others, Valentin Silvestrov, Elena Kats-Chernin and David Del Tredici. She was soloist with the Ensemble in Lee Hylas Piano Concerto No.2, at Alice Tully Hall. In 2010, she commissioned and premiered new works by three composers to commemorate the bicentennial of the births of Schumann and Chopin. In 2016, her world-premiere recording of the complete piano works of Morton Subotnick will be released on Mode label.
Ms. Anjou also devotes herself with enthusiasm to chamber music, especially with voice: she has received intensive coaching from Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Julia Varady on the lied and opera repertoire. She has a special passion for interdisciplinary projects, and was the musical director of the first German-language production of Moises Kaufman’s play “33 Variations”, which premiered at the Renaissance-Theater Berlin in 2010. To date, she has performed this play nearly 100 times. In 2011, Ms. Anjou joined the acclaimed German theater ensemble "Nico and the Navigators", known for their unique improvisation-based Musiktheater, to create an acclaimed staged version of Rossinis "Petite Messe Solennelle".
As soloist, she made her Boston Symphony Orchestra debut at 16 with Prokofievs 3rd Piano Concerto. She became known in Europe after winning a prize at the Robert Schumann International Piano Competition (Zwickau, Germany), and is also a laureate of the Orléans International Piano Competition (France). Her broad repertoire includes more than 30 concertos, ranging from Bach to Berio, as well as the complete works of Ravel and the complete Transcendental Etudes of Liszt.

[Prof.] Tino Derado
A graduate (BFA) of Berklee College of Music (Boston) and the New School (New York) Tino Derado , who studied on a Eubie Blake Scholarship, was introduced to classical piano at age six and and crossed over to Jazz in his early teens. In reflection of his mixed cultural heritage (Croatian/ German), he soon developed a dynamic interest in ethnic and world music.
In his course of his brief but remarkable career, Tino performed with Gary Burton, Peter Erskine, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, Paul Winter, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Cliff, Frank Gambale, Tom Rainey, Avishy Cohen, Craig Handy, Billy Drewes, Matthew Garrison, Rebekka Bakken, Nils Langren, Papo Vasquez, Orlando Marin y su orchestra, Andy Gonzales as well as Bob Moses, to name but a few, served as musical director for Gloria Gaynor, was finalist at the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship Competition, and toured extensively with various bands in Europe, South America, Russia and the Middle East. Mr Derado has lived the last 12 years in New York and has now moved back to Berlin/Germany. He is currently signed by Sunnysiderecords, released 6 CD’s under his name, is frequently working with the NDR Bigband and teaching at the JIB University (Berlin). 2014 Mr Derado became professor at the University in Hannover.

Studied piano and jazz piano with Manfred Schmitz at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Weimar. Numerous Ragtime concerts for the music publishers ”Edition Peters“. Performed in the Schwetzingen Festival als solo pianist in the Ragtime opera ”Treemonisha“ by Scott Joplin. Founded ”Hessels Ragtime Band“, performed repeatedly at the Dresden Dixieland Festival and won the first Dixie Award. Accompanied numerous jazz singers including Ruth Hohmann, Uschi Brühning, Angelika Weiz and Brenda Jackson as well as chansonnieres in various theatres and concert halls in Germany. Regular appearances in the „Jazz im Frack“ events at the Komische Oper Berlin, Schauspielhaus Berlin and Gewandhaus Leipzig. Pianist in various bands, e.g. „Jazzin´ the Blues“ , „Jumpin´ Jackets“, collaboration with Günther Fischer and numerous solo appearances in jazz clubs.

Although he plays all jazz styles, his main focus is on preserving and performing the classical jazz piano styles such as Ragtime, Boogie Woogie, Stride Piano and Swing.
Berlin based pianist-composer-arranger-clinician Reggie Moore grew up in NYC as the son of Billy Moore, musician and arranger for the Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra. He has toured Japan, the United States and Europe, recorded two albums for Mainstream and worked with such renowned jazz greats as Anita O’Day, Johnny Hartmann, Betty Carter, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Gary Bartz, Woody Shaw, Benny Golson and Kenny Burrell - to name a few. Since 1985 Reggie Moore has been living in Berlin, Germany, with his wife, jazz vocalist-composer Cornelia Moore, and their daughter Jessica. His unique art, which he himself calls “Communicable Music”and his dedicated teaching at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik, have been impacting the German jazz scene for the last 20 years.

The pianist, composer and arranger Andreas Schmidt was born in 1967 in Berlin. He took piano lessons from the age of 13 and also saxophone lessons from age 16.
In 1987 he met the Japanese pianist Aki Takase and the American pianist Walter Norris, both of whom taught him and encouraged him to devote himself to the piano. At this time he began to compose. Numerous TV and concert appearances in Germany followed. He has worked with his own groups, including such artists as Céline Rudolph, Horst Nonnenmacher, Jan von Klewitz, Paul Imm and Christian Kögel. In 1994 Andreas Schmidt met up with the famous alto saxophone player Lee Konitz – the co-founder of Cool Jazz – with whom he later released the CD Haiku. In 1995 Andreas Schmidt was awarded a composition scholarship by the Berlin Senate and spent six months in New York working with Jim Black, Jane Ira Bloom, D. D. Jackson, Suzie Ibarra and Joe Fiedler, amongst others. There he also met the pianist Paul Bley, who encouraged collaboration with the bass player Gary Peacock. Their joint project, the CD Berlin, was released in 1999.
Schmidt’s regular appearances in the A-Trane jazz club in Berlin made it possible for him to work with David Friedman, Mark Murphy, Steve Davis, Jasper van´t Hof, Till Brönner, Peter Fessler, Judy Niemack, Peter Weniger, Paul Brody and many other colleagues. In 2001 Minor Music produced the first of three albums of the Lisa Bassenge Trio, in which Andreas Schmidt is pianist, arranger and musical director. Tours with the Katja Riemann Octet and a world tour with Ute Lemper followed. In 2004 he was awarded the Jazz Performance Prize of the Karl Hofer Society. In addition, Andreas works as piano teacher and coach at the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" Berlin.
Nicolai Thärichen, born in 1969 in Berlin, studied jazz piano at the HdK Berlin and completed his postgraduate performance studies in 2001. He has composed and arranged music for the Bundesjugendjazzorchester, the BerlinerJugendJazzOrchester (BJJO) and for the Jazz Orchestra of the HdK Berlin under Maria Schneider and Bobby McFerrin. His own band, "Thärichens Tentet", has established itself on the German jazz scene with three CDs and various festival appearances since 1999. He teaches at the Berlin Landesmusikakademie, conducts the and has a part-time teaching contract in jazz piano, coaching and arranging at both Berlin Music Academies.
He works regularly in musical theatre as pianist (Theater des Westens) or as musical director Neukölln theatre, Maxim Gorki Theatre).
Rolf Zielke was born in 1964 in Hamlin, began playing the piano at age seven and studied music at the Academy of Music and Drama in Hannover.
Since the mid-eighties Rolf Zielke has been active on the jazz scene with varied projects and in international concerts.
Between 1986 and 2002 his bands won 13 prizes in the “Jazzpodium Niedersachsen“ competition. The ”Rolf Zielke Trio feat. Mustafa Boztüy“ won the Berlin Senate’s 2001 studio project prize, in 2004 this was won by the duo Zielke / Boztüy.
