Prof. Peter Weniger

Peter Weniger, born in 1964 in Hamburg, is one of the most spectacular saxophone soloists on the internationalen jazz scene.
He began his studies at the Hamburg Music Academy, where in 1984 he gained a diploma in popular music (at the time an experimental course). In 1992 he completed his jazz studies with ”summa cum laude“ at the Music Academy in Cologne.
He received many awards for his playing. In 1988 he won the Tonger music competition for saxophone in Cologne. In 1989 he was voted best soloist in the jazz festival in Karlovy- Vary in the former Czechoslovakia, In 1996 he received the SWF Jazz award and his CD ”Tip Tap“ the quarterly prize of the German recording critics. In 1998 he won the Jazz Pot for the best progressive artist..
Peter Weniger has so far published nine CDs under his own name, working with e.g. Hubert Nuss, Conrad Herwig, John Aebercrombie, Rufus Reid, Adam Nussbaum, David Liebman, Carl Allen, Dennis Erwin, John Schröder, Jeff Hamilton, Christian Ramond, Lynn Seaton, Wolfgang Haffner, Decebal Badila, Rob Pronk and the Metropol Orchestra. He has also recorded and toured with the most diverse artists and ensembles, including Jasper van´t Hofs „Pili Pili, Billy Cobham, Eddie Palmieri, Lionel Richie, Django Bates, Mike Stern, Leni Stern, David Friedman’s TAMBOUR, Peter Herbolzheimers RC&B, the Paul Kuhn Orchestra and the ARD Big Bands of SWR, HR, NDR and WDR.
Since the winter semester 1999/2000 he has been Professor at the University of the Arts Berlin.
